Why Is My Loved Ones Death Being Referred To A Coroner?

A death is referred to a Coroner if the reason your loved one has passed is not clear. If a body is found and their death is unexplained, unclear or suspicious it will be reported to a Coroner. Some other examples are listed below:

Your loved one did not see or was not treated by a doctor for any illness within 28 days of death.

• the cause of death was disease of the lungs and needed to be investigated to rule out asbestos.

• the death occurred in any circumstances that may require investigation such as murder, an accident, a violent attack, suicide or was sudden and unexpected.

• they died before a provisional diagnosis was made and the general practitioner is not willing to certify the cause

• the patient died as the result of the administration of an anaesthetic or their is a suspicion of negligence or wrong treatment.

• The person is in prison.
